How to Stay Motivated in Sales and Crush It!

August 11, 2018

Working in sales is a grind. Keeping your focus and meeting your quota month after month can take its toll. The ups and downs of sales can feel like a rollercoaster. Each dip is a disappointment, and each high is elation. There are ways to make the ride a bit more even. The following are some ways to keep your motivation high and crush your sales!

Set Goals

If you don't know where you're going how will you get there? According to a research study performed by the University of Scranton, only 8% of people achieve their goals. Why such a small number? The goals are vague, don't measure progress, and they don't reward themselves along the way. Set your sales goal and work backward. For instance, my goal is 30 new sales in 2018. I need to have at least three each month to meet my goal. Develop an action plan to reach these goals and reward yourself along the way. Make sure your reward is meaningful. A vacation, a spa day, a weekend getaway, whatever it takes to motivate you.

Count No's, not Yes's

In the book, Go for no! Yes is the Destination, no is how you get there written by Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz- you can find it here https://www.amazon.com/Yes-Destination-How-You-There/dp/0966398130. The authors describe how you can use reverse psychology to overcome the fear of rejection from prospecting. Any sales job involves some level of rejection. The ability to overcome this fear is critical to success. Once you do, you can fearlessly make more sales.

Get a Coach

Want to stay motivated? Stay engaged and up your game by getting a coach. A sales coach makes you better; a good one makes you examine yourself. A great one takes you on a journey of self-discovery that changes you forever! Find a coach whether it's youtube videos, following a blog or hiring someone with whom you can share your strengths and weaknesses. You will learn new ideas, skills, and find new energy to crush your goals!

Don't Take it Personal

There is a tendency to take the emotions of others personally. As sales professionals, not everyone you encounter is going to be a positive Pollyanna. Some clients like to share their bad day with others. This negative emotional contagion can color your day and negatively set your mood. Examine the reason behind the why of other peoples actions. Why is this person behaving this way? Is it really personal, or did they get in a fight with someone, get bad news or maybe forgot to take their meds?

Consider what else could be happening and never let a negative Norman ruin your day.

Share

Do you have somebody whom you can talk to that gets what you do? Find someone you can confide in share the good, bad and funny encounters you have with people. Maybe it's a co-worker, mentor, or your spouse. The important thing is to get it out. Vent, celebrate and share your experiences with your confidant. If you don't have anyone with whom you can share your day, tell Alexa. Although I'm not sure what you will get from Amazon if you do!

End on a High Note

Make the first thing you do each day something you enjoy, and make the last thing you do something to elevate your mood. At the end of the day replay the wins in your head. What went right, what did you score at, what goal did you achieve? We, as humans tend to remember the negatives far more than the positives. Break the habit and look for the positives at the end of every day. Listen to your favorite music on the way home. Find some quiet time morning, and evening to visualize your success. Plan your days, weeks, and months and give yourself the fuel you need to keep going.

Take care of you; physically, mentally and emotionally. If you want to stay motivated in your sales career take the time to set goals, review progress, develop resilience. Find a mentor or coach to help you stay motivated, find someone to share with, visualize success and go out there and be the best version of you!

Luck can be found at the intersection of hard work and perseverance.
