How to Master the Skill of Sales

August 21, 2017

I love my job! I am lucky enough to meet and build relationships with fantastic people, learn new things, and observe what works and what doesn't in sales. Enough about me, let's talk about what you came here for -  mastery of the sales process.

I have observed many sales professionals and examined their sales processes. Some do it this way; others do it that way. So what does it take to achieve sales mastery and how can you get there?

Successful sales professionals have many skills, but the most important skill I have found in successful sales professionals is a foundational mindset. An unwavering perseverance, optimism, and vision of their success.

Oh, and they like to plan their day.

Strategy without execution is - well, just a strategy.

Prospecting

How many of you are busy? Now, how many of you are effective? Look at your activities and tell me which ones are producing sales, the ones you like, or the ones you don't?

Does social media news feeds distract you? How much time do you spend each day on it? The average person spends anywhere from 2.1 to 5.1 hours per day unless you are a teenager then it is 9 hours per day.Try turning off your notifications, and removing it from your sight until your tasks are complete.

Attitude

We get the choice every day of how we show up for the world. You can view the world in a positive light, or a negative one, either way- you chose.

Delayed Gratification

How many times did you reach out to the prospect? If you think it was ten, it was probably two before giving up. It's not your fault, we are conditioned to want everything right now, including sales. It is no accident when I look at successful salespeople I see a consistent long term prospecting plan.

Practice

Look at anyone who is good at something, what do they have in common? Practice.

Elite athletes, musicians, actors, speakers, writers, and even sales trainers practiced before they became proficient and achieved mastery at their skill. Read blogs, books, and articles. Attend webinars, seminars, and podcasts and plan your sales day. Plan your work and work your plan.

Follow this advice, and you will be on your way to mastering the skill of sales.
